Something For The Kids

Sometimes an important focus on literacy in schools sneaks up and takes all the English curriculum space, squeezing out literature, storytelling and poetry. Reading for fun and opportunities to experiment freely with writing are quietly smothered. The necessary explicit teachings of genres can accidentally suffocate the thrill of writing to express, create and ponder. The luxury of writing a story simply becomes constructing a narrative within the walls of orientation, complication and resolution. Poetry is one avenue for writers, children and adults, to engage with words for enjoyment and stimulation. Poetry can be fun, challenging, silly and beautiful. It’s a chance to write without so many rules.
