I write picture books. I don’t illustrate them. I can’t illustrate them and I don’t really want to illustrate them. I believe that both the illustrations and the text are of equal importance in my books. They play a dual role in telling the story and engaging children.

While I completely understand that stunning illustrations are the first thing you notice when you open a picture book the following comments will offend me if you have one of my books in your hand:
- Children’s books are really all about the pictures aren’t they?
- The best thing about this book is the artwork.
- Your book is great. I didn’t get a chance to read it but the illustrations are wonderful.
You won’t offend me if you say:
- The pictures are beautiful.
- Isn’t the artwork gorgeous?
- The illustrations are perfect.
And you definitely won’t offend me if you say something positive about the words. I put quite a lot of thought into those.

Words are magic and so are illustrations. Put them together and kids get double the magic. Lucky them. Keep up the great work, Katrina.
I love picture books. The pictures of course are very important and often the first thing we notice. The words however are what really matters when we read them out loud. It’s the words that make it fun to read the same story over and over. It’s the well written books that make this such a joy to share and that children will not get tired of. I appreciate that you put a lot of thoughts into the words.
Now I feel better. Thank you Kaye and Jackie xx
Without a good writer, there is no story, regardless of format.
Hollywood has certainly proven that
Ignore the under-informed. You have plenty of fans who know better ::hugs::

Well thank you Liz! From now in I shall ignore the ‘under-informed’.
And those who never write pbs will never truly understand just how much thought you do put in. But of course we do. A picture book should be like a good cocktail (or mocktail in the case of kids) – each element perfectly complementing the other, so harmonious, you hardly realise you’re reading it.
Thanks Dimity. Other writers always understand. x
